Alma : «Quelle belle responsabilité de représenter la France à l’Eurovision»
INTERVIEW TV MAGAZINE - L’Eurovision 2017, c’est parti ! La jeune artiste, qui succède à Amir, y interprétera le titre Requiem. Entretien exclusif avant le grand rendez-vous à Kiev, et sur France 2, en mai prochain.
Alma a le regard rieur, les yeux noirs en amande, assortis à une longue chevelure brune. Cette chanteuse de 28 ans représentera la France au concours de l’Eurovision, le 13 mai, à Kiev (Ukraine), en direct sur France 2. Un événement dont TV Magazine est partenaire officiel. Alma y interprétera Requiem, un titre pop dans la lignée du renouveau amorcé l’an passé avec Amir. Rencontre avec une jeune femme bien décidée à se faire un prénom.
J’étais hyperexcitée! Quelle belle responsabilité! J’étais très fière.
Avant même d’avoir sorti un album, comment devient-on l’artiste qui défendra les couleurs de son pays dans un tel concours?
Il y a eu une sélection. J’ai eu la chance que ma chanson soit choisie. L’année dernière, on a vu avec Amir qu’un artiste émergent pouvait apporter beaucoup d’effervescence autour de cet événement. On va tenter de faire la même chose.
Amir avait l’avantage d’être connu…
Voilà pourquoi je suis entourée d’une superéquipe, grâce à mon label (Warner Music) et France Télévisions! C’est vrai qu’Amir avait fait The Voice. À moi de travailler pour me faire connaître ainsi que mes chansons et mon univers.
En quoi Requiem est-elle une chanson pour l’Eurovision?
Son message est très positif, plein d’espoir: il faut profiter de la vie, de chaque seconde, parce que c’est trop court. Cette chanson est sur mon album à venir et n’a pas été écrite pour l’Eurovision. Elle réunit plusieurs influences. J’aime beaucoup la variété française et j’accorde beaucoup d’importance aux textes. La mélodie est plus pop, avec des sonorités un peu orientales.
Le public ne sait pas grand-chose de vous. Quel est votre parcours?
Je suis née à Lyon. J’ai vécu dans différents pays en raison du métier de mon père: États-Unis, Brésil, Italie, Belgique. Il travaillait dans une entreprise américaine de grossiste informatique. J’ai fait une école de commerce, puis j’ai travaillé un an à Milan. Un jour, j’ai décidé d’opérer un virage à 180 degrés pour me lancer dans la musique et je suis rentrée vivre à Bruxelles.
À quel âge avez-vous commencé à composer?
À ce moment-là, à 22 ans. J’adorais chanter, jouer du piano, mais je n’avais jamais composé auparavant. Quand j’ai eu le temps de me poser la question: «Qu’est-ce que j’ai envie de faire de ma vie?», j’ai directement pensé à la chanson.
Que s’est-il alors passé?
J’ai une bonne étoile. Je me suis lancée et Edoardo Grassi m’a appelée pour faire partie de la troupe des Chansons d’abord, sur France 3. Là, j’ai rencontré Nazim [qui depuis a collaboré avec Kendji Girac, Claudio Capéo et Amir, ndlr], avec qui j’ai travaillé sur des chansons et qui m’a proposé Requiem. Il m’a présentée chez Warner, où j’ai été signée. Ce sont des rencontres comme ça qui ont changé ma vie.
Je suis fan de Johnny Hallyday - et mes parents aussi -, Michel Berger, Patrick Bruel, Véronique Sanson, France Gall. J’ai baigné là-dedans.
Pourquoi n’avoir jamais tenté votre chance dans un télécrochet?
J’ai été contactée par Bruno Berberes, il y a quelques années, pour faire le casting de The Voice et autres. Cela aurait été un biais superbe de passer par ce genre de télécrochet, mais je n’étais pas prête.
Vous faites actuellement les premières parties d’Amir. Quels conseils vous a-t-il donné?
Il m’a dit: «Alma, profite de chaque seconde, parce que c’est une aventure incroyable, unique. Il faut se concentrer exclusivement sur le travail que vous allez fournir, toi et ton équipe. Vraiment, il faut tout donner». Ça m’a inspirée.
Contrairement à J’ai cherché, la chanson d’Amir, dont le refrain était en anglais, les paroles de Requiem sont 100 % françaises. Est-ce un avantage ou un handicap?
Ma chanson a été écrite comme ça, avant d’être sélectionnée pour l’Eurovision. Pour toucher des personnes qui ne parlent pas français, j’aimerais en mettre une partie en anglais. Si les gens comprennent le thème, ils pourront s’identifier et, ainsi, je pourrai séduire un public plus large. En tout cas, cette idée est à l’étude.
Et l’Eurovision, vous suiviez?
J’étais devant la télé avec des amis lors de la prestation d’Amir, l’année dernière, et nous étions à fond! Puis, en m’intéressant à l’Eurovision, j’ai revu les prestations de France Gall, de Céline Dion. Me dire que mes idoles de jeunesse sont passées par là et qu’aujourd’hui j’ai la chance de le faire: je ne réalise pas encore, ça me touche beaucoup.
Il y a quarante ans, Marie Myriam remportait l’Eurovision avec L’Oiseau et l’Enfant…
J’ai réalisé cela il n’y a pas longtemps. C’est le patrimoine français. Les Kids United l’ont également reprise. Comme quoi, c’est une très belle chanson qui traverse les années.
Dans quel état d’esprit vous lancez-vous dans la compétition?
Quand on s’engage dans un concours, on se doit de tout faire pour être le mieux classé possible. Je vais tout donner pour rendre fiers le public, les Français et toute mon équipe.

Alma looks laughing, her eyes black with almond, matching a long brown hair. This 28-year-old singer will represent France at the Eurovision contest on May 13 in Kiev (Ukraine), live on France 2. An event of which TV Magazine is an official partner. Alma will perform Requiem, a pop title in the line of the renewal initiated last year with Amir. Meeting with a young woman determined to make a name for herself.
I was hyper-excited! What a great responsibility! I was very proud.
Before even releasing an album, how does one become the artist who will defend the colors of his country in such a contest?
There was a selection. I was lucky that my song was chosen. Last year we saw with Amir that an emerging artist could bring a lot of excitement around this event. We will try to do the same thing.

That's why I'm surrounded by a great team, thanks to my label (Warner Music) and France Télévisions! It's true that Amir had made The Voice. It is up to me to work to make myself known as well as my songs and my universe.
How is Requiem a song for Eurovision?
His message is very positive, hopeful: we must take advantage of life every second because it is too short. This song is on my upcoming album and has not been written for Eurovision. It brings together several influences. I really like the French variety and I attach great importance to the texts. The melody is more pop, with somewhat oriental sounds.
The public does not know much about you. What is your background?
I was born in Lyon. I lived in different countries because of my father's job: United States, Brazil, Italy, Belgium. He worked at a US wholesale computer company. I did a business school, then I worked a year in Milan. One day I decided to make a 180 degree turn to get into music and I came back to live in Brussels.
At what age did you start composing?
At that time, at 22 years. I loved to sing, to play the piano, but I had never composed before. When I had time to ask myself, "What do I want to do with my life?" I directly thought of the song.
I have a good star. I started and Edoardo Grassi called me to be part of the troupe Chansons first, on France 3. There I met Nazim [who since collaborated with Kendji Girac, Claudio Capéo and Amir, editor's note] , With whom I worked on songs and who proposed to me Requiem. He introduced me to Warner, where I was signed. These are meetings that changed my life.
Which artists inspired you?
I'm a fan of Johnny Hallyday - and my parents too -, Michel Berger, Patrick Bruel, Véronique Sanson, France Gall. I bathed in there.
Why did you never try your luck in a telecopier?
I was contacted by Bruno Berberes a few years ago to make the casting of The Voice and others. It would have been a superb bias to go through this kind of telecommute, but I was not ready.
You are currently doing the first parts of Amir. What advice did he give you?
He said, "Alma, take advantage of every second, because it's an incredible, unique adventure. You have to focus exclusively on the work you are going to provide, you and your team. Really, you have to give everything. " It inspired me.
Unlike I searched, the song of Amir, whose chorus was in English, the words of Requiem are 100% French. Is it an advantage or a handicap?
My song was written like this, before being selected for the Eurovision. To reach people who do not speak French, I would like to put some of it in English. If people understand the theme, they will be able to identify themselves, and so I can appeal to a wider audience. In any case, this idea is under consideration.
And the Eurovision, did you follow?
I was watching TV with friends during Amir's show last year, and we were all in! Then, interested in Eurovision, I reviewed the performances of France Gall, Céline Dion. Tell me that my idols of youth have passed by there and that today I have the chance to do it: I do not realize yet, it touches me very much.
Forty years ago, Marie Myriam won the Eurovision with L'Oiseau et l'Enfant ...
I realized that not long ago. It is the French heritage. The Kids United have also taken over. Like what, it's a very beautiful song that goes through the years.
What is your state of mind in the competition?
When you enter a contest, you have to do everything possible to be the best ranked. I will give everything to make the public, the French and all my team proud.
