Le concours Eurovision de la chanson 1988 fut la trente-troisième édition du concours. Il se déroula le samedi 30 avril 1988, à Dublin, en Irlande. Il fut remporté par la Suisse, avec la chanson Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi, interprétée par Céline Dion. Le Royaume-Uni termina deuxième et le Danemark, troisième.

L'Irlande, qui avait remporté l'édition 1987, se chargea de l’organisation de l’édition 1988[1].
La télévision publique irlandaise décida de donner à l'évènement un caractère spécial, afin de fêter le millénaire de la fondation de la ville de Dublin.
La RTÉ souhaitait également moderniser le concours, afin d’en renouveler les standards et d’attirer une audience plus jeune. Au final, l’édition 1988 renouvela profondément le format, le style et l’aspect de l’Eurovision, le faisant entrer dans l’ère de la modernité informatique et numérique.

Vingt-et-un pays participèrent au trente-troisième concours.
Chypre avait choisi pour la représenter, la chanson Thimame, écrite et composée par John Vickers et Aristos Moskovakis, et interprétée par Yiannis Demetriou. 
Mais, quelques semaines avant le concours, il apparut que cette chanson était le réarrangement d’un morceau ayant déjà concouru à la finale nationale chypriote, en 1984, et qui avait alors terminé troisième. Thimame fut disqualifiée par la télévision publique chypriote et Chypre, obligée de se retirer à la dernière minute.

Vingt-et-une chansons concoururent pour la victoire.

Le représentant suédois, Tommy Körberg, attrapa une angine, après son arrivée à Dublin. Malade, ayant perdu sa voix, il manqua plusieurs répétitions. Le soir venu, il parvint à interpréter sa chanson et termina douzième.
Le représentant britannique, Scott Fitzgerald, avait connu ses premiers succès musicaux à la fin des années septante. Mais en 1988, il travaillait sur le marché aux viandes de Glasgow. Sa participation au concours était donc une opportunité pour relancer sa carrière.
La chanson suisse, Ne partez pas sans moi, avait été écrite par Nella Martinetti et composée par Attila Şereftuğ. Ils étaient tous deux les auteurs de Pas pour moi, la chanson qui avait représenté la Suisse au concours, en 1986. Interprétée par Daniela Simons, Pas pour moi avait alors terminé deuxième.

Les représentantes allemandes, Chris Garden et Maxi Garden, étaient mère et fille. Ce fut la première dans l'histoire du concours qu'une mère et sa fille concoururent ensemble.
La représentante danoise, Kirsten Siggard, se fit particulièrement remarquer, lors de sa prestation. Elle en était alors à son huitième mois de grossesse. Elle accoucha de son second fils, à peine deux semaines après le concours. Lors de sa première participation au concours, en 1984, elle était également enceinte.
L'autre grande révélation du concours fut la représentante luxembourgeoise, Lara Fabian. Elle termina quatrième et connut par la suite une longue et fructueuse carrière.

The Eurovision Song Contest 1988 was the thirty-third edition of the competition . It took place Saturday, April 30, 1988 , in Dublin, Ireland. It was won by Switzerland with the song Do not Leave Without Me , performed by Celine Dion. The United Kingdom and Denmark finished second , third .

Ireland , who won the 1987 edition , undertook the organization of the 1988 edition [1] .
The Irish public broadcaster decided to give the event a special character to celebrate the millennium of the founding of the city of Dublin.
RTÉ also wanted to modernize the competition , in order to renew the standard and attract a younger audience . In the end, the 1988 edition profoundly renewed the format, style and appearance of Eurovision, bringing it into the era of computer and digital modernity.

Twenty -one countries participated in the thirty-third contest.
Cyprus was chosen to represent the Thimame song written and composed by John Vickers and Aristos Moskovakis and interpreted by Yiannis Demetriou .
But a few weeks before the competition , it appeared that this song was the rearrangement of a song having already contributed to the Cypriot national final in 1984 , and was then third. Thimame was disqualified from the Cypriot and Cyprus public television , forced to withdraw at the last minute .

Twenty -one songs competed for the win.

The Swedish representative , Tommy Körberg , grabbed angina, after his arrival in Dublin. Sick , having lost his voice, he missed several rehearsals. When evening came, he was able to interpret the song and finished twelfth .
The British representative , Scott Fitzgerald, had been his first musical success in the late seventies. But in 1988 , he worked in the meat market of Glasgow. His participation in the competition was therefore an opportunity to revive his career.
Swiss song, Do not leave without me , was written by Nella Martinetti and composed by Attila Şereftuğ . They were both authors of Not for me , the song that had represented Switzerland in the competition in 1986. Performed by Daniela Simons , Not for me then was second.

The German representatives , Maxi and Chris Garden Garden , were mother and daughter. This was the first in the history of the competition that a mother and daughter competed together.
The Danish representative , Kirsten Siggard , became particularly noted during his performance . She was then in her eighth month of pregnancy. She gave birth to her second son , just two weeks after the competition . In his first contest in 1984 , she was also pregnant .
The other big revelation of the competition was the Luxembourg representative , Lara Fabian . She finished fourth and enjoyed by a long and successful career on.
