Le concours Eurovision de la chanson 1972 fut la dix-septième édition du concours. Il se déroula le samedi 25 mars 1972, à Édimbourg, au Royaume-Uni. Il fut remporté par le Luxembourg, avec la chanson Après Toi, interprétée par Vicky Leandros. Le Royaume-Uni, pays hôte, termina deuxième et l'Allemagne, troisième.

Monaco, qui avait remporté l'édition 1971, se retrouva dans l'incapacité d'organiser l'édition 1972, faute de financement et de matériel adéquat. Les responsables de la télévision monégasque demandèrent l'aide de la télévision publique française, qui accepta d'organiser le concours. Les discussions n'aboutirent cependant jamais. La télévision monégasque souhaitait que le concours se tienne à Monaco; la télévision française, en France. Les responsables monégasques en appelèrent finalement à l'UER et ce fut la BBC qui se retrouva chargée de l'organisation. Monaco devint ainsi le seul pays vainqueur à ne jamais avoir accueilli le concours sur son sol.
Ce fut la première fois que la BBC choisit d'organiser le concours en dehors de Londres .

Dix-huit pays participèrent au dix-septième concours. Il n'y eut ni abstention, ni retour, ni début.

Un incident mineur se produisit durant la retransmission. Quelqu’un jeta de l'eau boueuse dans le public, juste avant la prestation de la candidate irlandaise. Le personnel décida de faire sortir les victimes. Elles se levèrent donc et quittèrent la salle, ce qui causa à Sandie Jones une grande frayeur.

Pour la toute première fois, la chanson irlandaise fut interprétée en gaélique, l'autre langue officielle du pays avec l'anglais.

The Eurovision Song Contest 1972 was the seventeenth edition of the competition. 
It took place Saturday, March 25, 1972, Edinburgh, UK. 

It was won by Luxembourg with the song After You, sung by Vicky Leandros. The United Kingdom, the host country, finished second and Germany third.Monaco, who won the 1971 edition, found himself unable to organize the 1972 edition due to lack of funding and proper equipment. 

Officials asked the Monegasque television using the French public television, who agreed to organize the competition. 
The discussions, however, never led. Monegasque television wanted the competition to be held in Monaco, the French television in France. 
The Monegasque officials finally called the EBU and the BBC which was found responsible for the organization. 
Monaco and became the only country to ever winner hosting the contest on its soil.This was the first time that the BBC chooses to organize the competition outside London.

Eighteen countries participated in the seventeenth competition. There were no abstentions or return, no beginning.
A minor incident occurred during transmission. 
Someone threw the muddy water in the public just before the delivery of the Irish candidate. The staff decided to make victims out. 
They then got up and left the room, which caused Sandie Jones afraid.

For the first time, the Irish Gaelic song was interpreted in the other official language with English.
