La date initialement fixée pour la finale était le samedi 2 avril 1977. Mais les caméramans et les techniciens de la BBC se mirent en grève, paralysant toute l'organisation du concours. La finale nationale britannique ne put même pas être diffusée. L'édition 1977 menaçant d'être annulée, les responsables de la télévision publique néerlandaise proposèrent de se charger de son organisation. Cependant les syndicats et les techniciens néerlandais se déclarèrent solidaires de leurs collègues britanniques et menacèrent de se mettre en grève à leur tour. Au final, un arrangement finit par être trouvé et la date du concours fut reportée de cinq semaines.

Dix-huit pays participèrent au vingt-deuxième concours.
La Suède fit son retour. Suite à ses mauvais résultats aux éditions précédentes du concours, la Yougoslavie décida de se retirer, pour ne revenir qu'en 1981.
La Tunisie s'était inscrite pour faire ses débuts, mais se retira au dernier moment, sans donner plus d'explications.

Ce fut la cinquième victoire de la France. Ce record ne fut égalé qu'à quatre reprises : par le Luxembourg en 1983, l'Irlande en 1993, le Royaume-Uni en 1997 et la Suède en 2012. Il ne fut dépassé qu'une seule fois : en 1994, par l'Irlande.

Par la suite, Marie Myriam confia qu’elle était tellement nerveuse, lors de sa prestation, qu’elle ne put empêcher ses mains de trembler.

Marie Myriam reçut la médaille du grand prix des mains de Sir Charles Curran (en), président de l'UER et directeur général de la BBC. Son retour sur scène prit plus de temps que prévu. Marie Myriam, en pleurs, embrassait tous les autres participants. Mais alors qu’elle se dirigeait vers la porte des coulisses, le caméraman qui la filmait fit une chute spectaculaire dans les escaliers, lui barrant le passage. Marie s’arrêta alors net de pleurer et lui vint en aide. Angela Rippon (en) se fendit à nouveau d’une plaisanterie : « I can imagine the scene backstage, now. Someone rushing to find the winning artist. Where is she ? »

Dix-huit chansons concoururent pour la victoire.
La prestation la plus remarquée de la soirée fut celle des représentants autrichiens, le groupe Schmetterlinge. Les quatre membres masculins portaient un costume, blanc par devant et noir par derrière. Le côté blanc était décoré d’un papillon vert et d’un cœur rouge. Le côté noir était décoré de plusieurs billets de banque. Ils portaient en outre à l’arrière de leur tête, un masque grimaçant fumant un cigare, s’accordant avec le côté noir. Ce déguisement illustrait le thème de la chanson, la toute première chanson parodique présentée au concours : l’exploitation de la musique et des artistes par des producteurs et des financiers sans scrupules.

The original deadline for the final was Saturday, April 2, 1977 . But cameramen and technicians from the BBC went on strike , paralyzing the entire organization of the competition . British national finals could not even be played. The 1977 edition threatening to be canceled , officials of the Dutch public television proposed to be responsible for its organization. However, the unions and the Dutch technicians declared solidarity with their British colleagues and threatened to go on strike in turn . In the end, an agreement was eventually reached and the date of the contest was postponed for five weeks.

Eighteen countries participated in the twenty-second contest.
Sweden made a comeback . 
Following its poor results in previous editions of the competition , Yugoslavia decided to retire , only to return in 1981 .
Tunisia was included to make his debut , but withdrew at the last moment , without giving further explanations.

This was the fifth victory of France . 
This record was equaled only four times : by Luxembourg in 1983 , Ireland in 1993, the UK in 1997 and Sweden in 2012. It was exceeded only once : in 1994 , for Ireland.

Subsequently, Marie Myriam told she was so nervous during her performance , she could not keep his hands from shaking .

Marie Myriam received the medal of the Grand Prize from the hands of Sir Charles Curran (en), EBU President and Director General of the BBC . 
His comeback took longer than expected. Marie Myriam , crying , embraced all the other participants. 
But as she headed towards the backstage door , the cameraman who was filming a dramatic fall down the stairs , blocking his path . Marie then stopped short to cry and came to his aid . 
Angela Rippon (in ) lunged again a joke : " I can imagine the scene backstage now . Someone rushing to find the winning artist . Where is she ? "

Eighteen songs competed for the win.
The most notable performance of the night was that of the Austrian representatives , the Schmetterlinge group. 
The four male members wore a suit, white in front and black behind. The white side was decorated with a green butterfly and a red heart . 
The dark side was decorated with several banknotes. 
They were also in the back of their head, grinning mask smoking a cigar , according with the dark side. 
This costume illustrating the theme of the song, the first song parody submitted to the competition : the exploitation of artists and music by producers and financial unscrupulous .
