Le concours Eurovision de la chanson 1978 fut la vingt-troisième édition du concours. Il se déroula le samedi 22 avril 1978, à Paris, en France. Il fut remporté par Israël, avec la chanson A-Ba-Ni-Bi, interprétée par Izhar Cohen et The Alphabeta. La Belgique termina deuxième et la France, pays hôte, troisième.

La France, ayant remporté l'édition 1977, se chargea de l’organisation de l’édition 1978.

Vingt pays participèrent au vingt-troisième concours, un nouveau record.
La Turquie fit son retour, tout comme le Danemark, après douze années d'absence. 
Ce fut la première fois que la Turquie et la Grèce concoururent à une même édition de l'Eurovision, ayant évité ce cas de figure en 1975, 1976 et 1977.

Les présentateurs de la soirée furent Denise Fabre et Léon Zitrone. Ce fut la toute première fois que deux personnes présentèrent ensemble le concours. 
Ce fut également la première fois depuis 1956 qu'un homme présenta le concours. Hormis quelques exceptions, Denise Fabre s'adressa aux téléspectateurs en français et Léon Zitrone, en anglais.

Vingt chansons concoururent pour la victoire.
La représentante allemande, Ireen Sheer, effectua le premier effet vestimentaire de l’histoire du concours. Arrivée au refrain de sa chanson, elle dégrafa son gilet et le lança derrière elle, dans un geste théâtral.

Les représentantes luxembourgeoises, le duo Baccara, étaient données favorites par les bookmakers. Elles avaient en effet réalisé les meilleures ventes de disques de l’année précédente, avec leurs deux plus grands succès Yes Sir, I Can Boogie et Sorry, I’m A Lady. Elles représentaient en outre un certain internationalisme musical, puisqu’elles étaient de nationalité espagnole, qu’elles avaient été signées par la division allemande d’une maison de disques américaine et qu’elles représentaient le Luxembourg avec une chanson en français. Elles terminèrent cependant septièmes.

La chanson israélienne s’inspirait d’un langage imaginaire, appelé Code B, et qui avait été inventé par des enfants hébreux pour communiquer entre eux, sans être compris de leurs parents. Son principe fondamental consiste à ajouter systématiquement un « B » après chaque syllabe, en répétant la voyelle de la syllabe. La responsable de la délégation israélienne Rivka Michaeli arriva sans grand espoir à Paris. Elle avait jugé la finale nationale israélienne désastreuse et les chansons qui avaient été présentées, mauvaises, A-Ba-Ni-Bi étant pour elle la moins mauvaise. 
La victoire de son pays lui causa donc une grande surprise. Izhar Cohen, de son côté, demeura certain de sa victoire du début à la fin.

Le représentant suédois, Björn Skifs, était mécontent du changement du règlement opéré en 1977 et de l’obligation désormais faite de chanter dans sa langue nationale. Il décida de passer outre et d’interpréter sa chanson en anglais. Il changea cependant d’avis au dernier moment et du coup, oublia les paroles des premières strophes. Il marmonna un instant, avant de se reprendre. Il termina malgré tout quatorzième.

The Eurovision Song Contest 1978 was the twenty-third edition of the competition . It took place Saturday, April 22, 1978 in Paris , France. It was won by Israel , with the song A- Ba -Ni -Bi , performed by Izhar Cohen and The Alphabeta . Belgium and France finished second , host third.

France, who won the 1977 edition , undertook the organization of the 1978 edition .

Twenty countries participated in the twenty-third contest, a new record.
Turkey made a comeback , as Denmark, after twelve years of absence.
It was the first time that Turkey and Greece competed in the same edition of Eurovision, having avoided this scenario in 1975 , 1976 and 1977.

The presenters of the evening were Denise Fabre and Léon Zitrone . It was the first time that two people presented all the competition.
It was also the first time since 1956 that a man presented the competition . With few exceptions, Denise Fabre spoke to viewers and Leon Zitrone French , English .

Twenty songs competed for the win.
The German representative , Ireen Sheer, made the first dress effect in the history of the competition. Check the chorus of the song , she unbuttoned her jacket and threw it behind her, in a theatrical gesture .

Luxembourg's representatives , the duo Baccara , data were favorites by the bookmakers. They had indeed achieved the highest record sales in the previous year with their two biggest hits Yes Sir , I Can Boogie and Sorry, I'm A Lady . They also represented a musical internationalism , as they were of Spanish nationality, they were signed by the German American record a house and they represented Luxembourg with a song in French division. However they terminèrent seventh.

Israeli song was inspired by an imaginary language called B Code , which had been invented by the Hebrew children to communicate with each other without being understood by their parents. Its basic principle is to systematically add a "B" after each syllable , repeating the vowel of the syllable. The head of the Israeli delegation Rivka Michaeli arrived in Paris without much hope . She felt the disastrous Israeli national final and songs that were presented , bad A- Ba -Ni -Bi is the least bad for her .
The victory of his country caused him so much surprise. Izhar Cohen , meanwhile , remained sure of his victory from beginning to end .

The Swedish representative , Björn Skifs was unhappy with the rule change made in 1977 and now the obligation made to sing in their own language . He decided to go ahead and interpret the song in English. However, he changed his mind at the last moment and suddenly forgot the lyrics of the first stanza . He muttered a moment before recovering . He still finished fourth .
