Le concours Eurovision de la chanson 1979 fut la vingt-quatrième édition du concours. Il se déroula le samedi 31 mars 1979, à Jérusalem, en Israël. Il fut remporté par Israël, pays hôte, avec la chanson Hallelujah, interprétée par Gali Atari et Milk and Honey. L’Espagne termina deuxième et la France, troisième.


Israël, ayant remporté l'édition 1978, se chargea de l’organisation de l’édition 1979. Ce fut la première fois que le concours se tint dans une ville située en dehors du continent européen et ce fut la dernière fois que la finale eut lieu au mois de mars. Enfin, ce fut la première émission en couleur produite par la télévision publique israélienne.
Des groupes religieux orthodoxes manifestèrent à plusieurs reprises leur opposition à l’organisation du concours. En effet, celui-ci avait fixé un samedi, jour du shabbat, jour de repos consacré dans la religion juive. Cela et le contexte international eurent pour conséquence un renforcement drastique des mesures de sécurité.

Dix-neuf pays participèrent au vingt-quatrième concours.
La Turquie avait sélectionné pour la représenter, la chanson Seviyorum, interprétée par Maria Rita Epik et le groupe 21.Peron. Dans le cadre de la crise pétrolière et des tensions internationales, le pays subit les pressions des pays voisins d’Israël et finit par se retirer.

Le concours eut lieu au Binyanei Ha’Ooma, à Jérusalem, salle de spectacle et de conférence achevée en 1963.

Dix-neuf chansons concoururent pour la victoire.

Les représentants suisses, Peter, Sue & Marc, étaient accompagnés par un groupe de musique folk alternative, le trio Pfuri, Knorps & Kniri. Ces derniers utilisèrent des objets de jardin comme instruments de musique, notamment des sacs en plastique, un râteau métallique, un arrosoir et un sécateur. Mais à cause d’eux, ils faillirent se faire refouler du pays, à leur arrivée à l’aéroport de Tel-Aviv. Les services de sécurité eurent en effet beaucoup de mal à croire qu’ils en usaient réellement comme d’instruments.

Le groupe allemand Dschinghis Khan avait été formé spécialement pour l’occasion. Leur chanson était une composition de Ralph Siegel. Elle suscita une vive controverse dans l’opinion publique allemande, après avoir remporté la finale nationale. Certains estimaient qu’en vantant les exploits d’un meurtrier de masse, elle faisait la promotion de la violence et donnerait une mauvaise image de l’Allemagne en Israël. Les spectateurs dans la salle lui réservèrent pourtant un très bon accueil .

La France avait choisi trois précédents vainqueurs pour la représenter. Je suis l'enfant soleil avait en effet comme auteur Eddy Marnay (auteur de Un jour, un enfant, victorieux en 1969), comme compositeur Hubert Giraud (compositeur de Dors mon amour, victorieux en 1958) et comme interprète Anne-Marie David (victorieuse en 1973, avec Tu te reconnaîtras).
La représentante belge, Micha Marah, était extrêmement mécontente de sa chanson. Elle aurait préféré interpréter à la place, une autre composition intitulée Comment Ca Va. Elle alla jusqu’à accuser le jury de la finale nationale belge d’avoir manipulé les résultats et refusa toujours d’enregistrer la moindre version de Hey Nana.

La chanson autrichienne, Heute in Jerusalem, fut la première chanson de l’histoire du concours à faire mention dans ses paroles de la ville hôte.
Les auteurs de la chanson espagnole s’étaient inspirés de l’Année Internationale de l’Enfance, lancée en 1979 par les Nations-Unies. La chanteuse Betty Missiego décida de parachever le concept, en se faisant accompagner sur scène par un chœur de quatre enfants. À la fin de la prestation, les enfants déployèrent des banderoles sur lesquelles étaient inscrite le mot « paix », en anglais, en espagnol, en français et en hébreu.

The Eurovision Song Contest 1979 was the twenty-fourth edition of the competition . It took place Saturday, March 31, 1979 in Jerusalem , Israel. It was won by Israel , the host country , with the song Hallelujah performed by Gali Atari and Milk and Honey . Spain finished second and France third.


Israel , having won the 1978 edition , undertook the organization of the 1979 edition . This was the first time the competition was held in a town outside the European continent and that was the last time the final was held in March . Finally , it was first broadcast in color produced by the Israeli public television.
Orthodox religious groups repeatedly manifested their opposition to the organization of the competition . Indeed, it had set a Saturday, the Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the Jewish religion. That and the international context had resulted in a drastic strengthening of security measures.

Nineteen countries participated in the twenty-fourth contest.
Turkey was selected to represent the Seviyorum song , performed by Maria Rita Epik and 21.Peron group. As part of the oil crisis and international tensions , the country under pressure from neighboring countries and Israel eventually withdrew .

The competition took place at Binyanei Ha'Ooma in Jerusalem , auditorium and conference completed in 1963.

Nineteen songs competed for the win.
Swiss representatives , Peter , Sue & Marc , were accompanied by a group of alternative folk music , the trio Pfuri , Knorps & Kniri . These objects used it as garden musical instruments, including plastic bags, a metal rake, a watering can and pruning shears. But because of them , they just make do repress the country upon arrival at the airport in Tel Aviv. The security services were indeed very hard to believe they actually used like instruments .

The German band Dschinghis Khan was formed especially for the occasion . Their song was a composition by Ralph Siegel. It caused great controversy in the German public after winning the national final . Some felt that extolling the exploits of a mass murderer , she was promoting violence and give a bad image of Germany in Israel. The spectators in the room yet it reserved to a good home .

France had three previous winners chosen to represent . I am the child sun had indeed as the author Eddy Marnay (author of One day , a child, winning in 1969 ) , as a composer Hubert Giraud ( composer Sleep my love, victorious in 1958 ) and performer Anne- Marie David ( victorious in 1973 with you recognize yourself ) .
The Belgian representative , Micha Marah , was extremely dissatisfied with his song . She would rather read instead , another composition entitled How It Goes . She went as far as accusing the jury of the Belgian national final to have manipulated the results and always refused to register any version of Hey Nana .

Austrian song, Heute in Jerusalem , was the first song in the history of the competition to mention in his speech of the host city .
The authors of the Spanish song was inspired by the International Year of the Child , which was launched in 1979 by the United Nations . The singer Betty Missiego decided to finalize the concept , by being accompanied on stage by a chorus of four children. At the end of the service, children unfurled banners on which were inscribed the word "peace " in English, Spanish, French and Hebrew.
