L'Allemagne est un des pays fondateurs du concours Eurovision de la chanson et participe donc depuis sa première édition en 1956.
Depuis 1998, les plus grands contributeurs financiers à l'UER (sans laquelle la production du concours ne serait pas possible) sont qualifiés automatiquement pour la finale de l'Eurovision, indépendamment de leur place dans les concours précédents : le Royaume-Uni, l'Allemagne, la France et l'Espagne (le «Big Four»), rejoints depuis 2011 par l'Italie, longtemps absente du concours (le «Big Five»).
L’Allemagne est un pays musicalement novateur.
Il à souvent présenté au Concours des chansons décalées, loufoques et quelquefois déjantées. Avec des styles atypiques tels que:
2006: Country-Western avec Texas Lightning – "No No Never"
2007: Swing avec Roger Cicero – "Frauen regier'n die Welt"
2009: Swing avec Alex Swings Oscar Sings – "Miss Kiss Kiss Bang"
Présenté une chanson en langue allemande n’est à priori pas toujours facile.
L’Allemagne à donc décidé depuis quelques années de chanter en langue anglaise.
Bien que l’Allemagne n’a gagné que 2 fois l‘Eurovision, l'intérêt public reste élevé et le Concours est l'un des événements les plus regardé chaque année.
1982: Nicole «Ein bißchen Frieden». Une jolie ballade pour la paix sur terre.
2010: Lena Meyer-Landrut «Satellite». Une chanson en anglais (Pour ma part, je n’accroche pas.. Ni à la chanson, ni à l’interprète) .
Cela dit, la chanson sortait du lot de la cuvée 2010.
En 2009, l'ARD a tenu une sélection interne pour la première fois depuis 1995 en raison du manque d'intérêt et de chiffres d'audience de la finale nationale allemande. Alex Christensen et Oscar Loya ont été sélectionnés pour représenter l'Allemagne lors du concours 2009, où ils ont joué sur scène avec le célèbre artiste burlesque Dita Von Teese.
Cependant ils n'ont réussi à recevoir que 35 points, les plaçant à la 20e position sur 25 pays en compétition.
En 2010, l'ARD demande à l'ancien participant et compositeur Stefan Raab et au réseau privé ProSieben de coopérer pour trouver un gagnant pour le pays.
Il a été dit que Stefan Raab avait été approché en raison de son bon dossier au Concours, terminant 5ème en 2000 en tant qu’interprète,7éme en 1998 et 8éme en 2004 en tant qu’auteur.
La proposition convient à Stefan Raab et il réalise une émission de télévision appelée "Unser Star für Oslo» («Notre étoile pour Oslo") qui a été diffusé sur ARD et ProSieben.
Un gagnante de cette sélection fût Lena Meyer-Landrut avec «Satellite», qui remporta L‘Eurovision.
Deutschland in Eurovision
Deutschland ist Gründungsmitglied des Eurovision Song Contest und spielt deshalb seit ihrer ersten Ausgabe im Jahr 1956.
