Le concours Eurovision de la chanson 2006 fut la cinquante-et-unième édition du concours. Il se déroula les jeudi 18 et samedi 20 mai 2006, à Athènes, en Grèce. 
Il fut remporté par la Finlande, avec la chanson Hard Rock Hallelujah, interprétée par le groupe Lordi. 
La Russie termina deuxième et la Bosnie-Herzégovine, troisième.

La Grèce, qui avait remporté l'édition 2005, se chargea de l’organisation de l’édition 2006.

Deux ans auparavant, Athènes avait accueilli les Jeux olympiques d’été. La capitale grecque disposait donc de nombreuses salles adéquates. Ce fut finalement l’Olympic Indoor Arena qui fut retenue.

Trente-sept pays participèrent au cinquante-et-unième concours.

L’Autriche et la Hongrie se retirèrent. 
L’Arménie fit ses débuts.

La Serbie-et-Monténégro devait initialement participer, mais une vive controverse éclata durant la procédure de sélection nationale. Il y eut des tensions entre les télédiffuseurs serbe et monténégrin et des divergences flagrantes dans l’attribution des points par les jurys, lors de la finale. 
Au terme de celle-ci, ce fut le groupe monténégrin No Name (qui avait déjà représenté le pays l’année précédente) qui l’emporta avec la chanson Moja ljubavi. 
Mais devant l’ampleur de la contestation interne, le pays décida de se retirer. Il conserva cependant le droit de voter durant la demi-finale et la finale.

Les présentateurs des deux soirées furent Maria Menounos et Sakis Rouvas. Ils s’exprimèrent en anglais et en français, ajoutant parfois quelques mots en grec.

Maria Menounos est une actrice américaine, d’origine grecque. Sakis Rouvas est un chanteur, qui avait déjà représenté son pays au concours, en 2004, à Kiev, où il avait terminé troisième.

La participante islandaise, Silvia Night, suscita la controverse, durant toute la semaine des répétitions. Il s’agissait en réalité d’un personnage de diva extravagante créé et interprété par l’actrice Ágústa Eva Erlendsdóttir. Silvia Night passa ainsi son temps à se moquer ouvertement des autres concurrents, à traiter les journalistes avec le plus grand mépris et à émettre des commentaires déplaisants sur la Grèce et ses habitants. Elle alla jusqu’à accuser la participante suédoise, Carola, de vouloir l’empoisonner. 
Ce happening permanent fut cependant pris au premier degré par les médias et les organisateurs. La chanteuse fut conspuée à de nombreuses reprises durant les répétitions, puis accueillie sur scène par des sifflets et des huées d’une ampleur inédite.

Ce fut la première victoire de la Finlande au concours. 
Ce fut la première fois qu’une chanson de hard rock remporta la victoire et la première fois qu’un pays victorieux obtint le même résultat en demi-finale et en finale.

Deux records furent battus ce soir-là.
Premièrement, celui du plus long intervalle de temps écoulé entre une première participation et une première victoire. Le record était jusque-là détenu par la Belgique. Trente ans séparèrent ses débuts en 1956 et sa première victoire en 1986. La Finlande, elle, dut attendre quarante-cinq ans pour remporter le concours, ayant participé pour la première fois en 1961. 
Jusque-là, le meilleur résultat obtenu par le pays avait été la sixième place de Marion Rung, en 1973.
 Deuxièmement, celui du score le plus important. Le record précédent était détenu par l’Ukraine, qui avait obtenu 280 points en 2004. 
La Finlande, elle, obtint 292 points. Il fallut attendre 2009 pour que ce record soit à nouveau surpassé : la Norvège obtint alors 387 points.

Lordi reçut le trophée de la victoire des mains de Helena Paparizou, gagnante de l’année précédente. Après le concours, Hard Rock Hallelujah remporta un très grand succès commercial2.

Enfin, ce fut la toute première fois que la Lituanie reçut "douze points", après douze années de participation.

The Eurovision Song Contest 2006 was the fifty-first edition of the competition. It took place on Thursday 18 and Saturday, May 20, 2006 in Athens, Greece. 
It was won by Finland with the song Hard Rock Hallelujah, performed by the band Lordi. 
Russia finished second and Bosnia and Herzegovina, third.

Greece, who won the 2005 edition, took charge of the organization of the 2006 edition.

Two years ago, Athens hosted the Summer Olympics. The Greek capital had so many suitable rooms. It was finally the Olympic Indoor Arena, which was accepted.

Thirty-seven countries participated in the fifty-first contest.

Austria and Hungary withdrew.
Armenia debuted.

The Serbia and Montenegro was initially participate, but a controversy broke out during the national selection procedure. There were tensions between the Serbian and Montenegrin broadcasters and gross differences in the allocation of points by the jury, in the final.
At the end of it, it was the Montenegrin group No Name (who had already represented the country the previous year) who won with the song Moja ljubavi.
But given the magnitude of the internal dispute, the countries decided to retire. However, he retained the right to vote during the semifinal and the final.

The presenters of the two evenings were Maria Menounos and Sakis Rouvas. They expressed themselves in English and French, sometimes adding a few words in Greek.

Maria Menounos is an American actress of Greek origin. Sakis Rouvas is a singer who had already represented his country in the contest in 2004 in Kiev, where he finished third.

The Icelandic participant, Silvia Night, aroused controversy throughout the week of rehearsals. It was actually an extravagant diva character created and performed by Eva Ágústa Erlendsdóttir actress. Silvia Night and spent his time openly mock the other competitors, to treat journalists with the utmost contempt and emit unpleasant comments about Greece and its people. She went as far as accusing the Swedish participant, Carola, of wanting to poison him.
This permanent happening, however, was taken at face value by the media and organizers. The singer was booed repeatedly during rehearsals and on stage greeted by whistles and boos on an unprecedented scale.


It was the first victory for Finland in the contest.
This was the first time a hard rock song won the victory and the first time a victorious countries obtained the same result in the semifinals and final.

Two records were broken that night.
First, the longer time interval between first appearance and first victory. The record was previously held by Belgium. Thirty years separated his debut in 1956 and his first victory in 1986. Finland, she had to wait forty-five years to win the competition, having participated for the first time in 1961.
Until then, the best result achieved by the country was sixth in Marion Rung in 1973.
Second, one of the most important score. The previous record was held by Ukraine, which had obtained 280 points in 2004.
Finland, she got 292 points. It was not until 2009 that this record was surpassed again: Norway then awarded 387 points.
