The Eurovision Song Contest 2011 was the fifty-sixth edition of the competition. It took place on Tuesday 10, Thursday 12 and Saturday, May 14, 2011, in Düsseldorf, Germany. It was won by Azerbaijan with the song Running Scared, performed by Ell & Nikki.Italy finished second and Sweden third.Germany, who won the 2010 edition, took charge of the organization of the 2011 edition. This was the first time one of the "Big Four" (the four largest financial contributors to the EBU - Germany, Spain, France and the UK) organized the competition, since the introduction of the rule in 2000.Forty-three countries participated in the fifty-sixth competition, equaling the 2008 record.
Four countries made their return: Austria, Hungary, Italy and San Marino.
Italy returned after an absence of fourteen years, who participated for the last time in 1997. The country became part of the larger financial contributors to the EBU group, with Germany, Spain, France and the United Kingdom. This group was therefore designated as the "Big Five". As such, Italy benefited of an automatic place in the finals.
Slovakia had originally planned to withdraw for financial reasons, but forgot to notify the EBU. His name therefore remained on the list of participating countries and was published and after the date of official registration deadline. To avoid a fine for late withdrawal, the country decided to compete anyway.
Liechtenstein wished to debut and put his candidature as an active member of the EBU. This status, however, was denied and the country could not participate in the contest.
Four other countries have not wished to participate and make their return, mainly for financial reasons: Andorra, Luxembourg, Monaco and the Czech Republic. Montenegro was initially registered, but retired December 23, 2010, two days before the closing date, for the same reasons.
