Le concours Eurovision de la chanson 1989 fut la trente-quatrième édition du concours. Il se déroula le samedi 6 mai 1989, à Lausanne, en Suisse. Il fut remporté par la Yougoslavie, avec la chanson Rock Me, interprétée par Riva. Le Royaume-Uni termina deuxième et le Danemark, troisième.

La Suisse, qui avait remporté l'édition 1988, se chargea de l’organisation de l’édition 1989.
L'UER introduisit une nouvelle règle dans le règlement du concours. Désormais, en cas d'ex aequo, la victoire serait attribuée au pays ayant remporté le plus de "douze points". Si deux ou plusieurs pays avaient reçu en nombre égal la note maximale, ils seraient départagés par le décompte des "dix points". En cas de nouvel ex aequo, tous les pays concernés seraient déclarés vainqueurs.

Vingt-deux pays participèrent au trente-quatrième concours, égalant ainsi le record de 1987.
Chypre fit son retour. Il n'y eut ni début, ni retrait.

Vingt-deux chansons concoururent pour la victoire.
La chanson turque, Bana, bana, avait été écrite et composée par Timur Seldçuk, qui dirigea également l'orchestre pour son pays. Sa fille, Hazal Selçuk, faisait partie du quatuor Pan.
Les chansons allemandes et autrichiennes avaient été toutes les deux composées par Dieter Bohlen. Ce dernier faisait partie du duo à succès Modern Talking.

Ce fut la toute première fois que la chanson suisse fut interprétée en romanche, une des quatre langues nationales du pays.
La chanson yougoslave, Rock Me, avait été écrite par Stevo Cvikić et composée par Rajko Dujmić. C'était là leur troisième participation consécutive au concours, après Ja sam za ples, qui avait terminé quatrième en 1987, et Mangup, qui avait terminé sixième en 1988.

Ce fut la première victoire de la Yougoslavie au concours. Ce fut aussi la seule et unique victoire de ce pays au concours, avant sa dissolution en 1992. Ce fut enfin la première victoire d'une chanson en serbo-croate.
Le groupe Riva reçut le trophée de la victoire des mains de Céline Dion, gagnante de l'année précédente. Ils effectuèrent ensuite la reprise de Rock Me en anglais.

Ce fut la deuxième année consécutive que le Royaume-Uni et le Danemark terminèrent respectivement deuxième et troisième.
Le représentant britannique, Ray Caruana, leader du groupe Live Report, se montra très amer dans sa défaite. Il se répandit en récriminations contre le concours et la victoire de la Yougoslavie, considérant que sa chanson était bien supérieure à Rock Me.
Pour la première fois, l'Islande termina dernière, avec "nul point". De façon assez prémonitoire, lors de sa victoire à la finale nationale islandaise, Daníel avait reçu comme trophée, un cactus.

The Eurovision Song Contest 1989 was the thirty-fourth edition of the competition . It took place Saturday, May 6, 1989 , in Lausanne, Switzerland. It was won by Yugoslavia , with the song Rock Me , performed by Riva . The United Kingdom and Denmark finished second , third .


Switzerland , who won the 1988 edition , undertook the organization of the 1989 edition .
The EBU introduced a new rule in the contest rules. Now, in case of a tie , the victory is awarded to the country that won the most " twelve points " . If two or more countries had received an equal number of the maximum score , they would be counting up the count of " ten points " . In case of a further tie , all countries would be declared winners .

Twenty-two countries participated in the thirty-fourth contest, tying the record set in 1987.
Cyprus made a comeback . There was no beginning and no withdrawal.

Twenty- two songs competed for the win.
The Turkish song Bana bana , was written and composed by Timur Seldçuk who also conducted the orchestra for his country. His daughter, Hazal Selçuk was part of the quartet Pan.
German and Austrian songs were both composed by Dieter Bohlen . This was part of the successful duo Modern Talking .
It was the first time the song was performed in Swiss Romansh , one of the four national languages .
The Yugoslav song, Rock Me , was written and composed by Stevo Cvikić Rajko Dujmic . This was their third straight contest after Ja sam za ples , who finished fourth in 1987 and Mangup , who finished sixth in 1988.

It was the first victory of Yugoslavia in the contest. It was also the only country to win this contest, before its dissolution in 1992. It was finally the first victory of a song in Serbo -Croatian.Riva group received the winner's trophy from the hands of Celine Dion , who won the previous year . They then resumed effectuèrent Rock Me English.This was the second consecutive year that the United Kingdom and Denmark terminèrent second and third respectively.The British representative , Ray Caruana , frontman Live Report , showed very bitter in defeat. It spread in recriminations against the competition and win Yugoslavia , considering that his song was far superior to Rock MeFor the first time , Iceland finished last with " null point ." Fairly prescient when he won the Icelandic national final Daníel had received as a trophy , a cactus.
