Le concours Eurovision de la chanson 2008 fut la cinquante-troisième édition du concours. Il se déroula les mardi 20, jeudi 22 et samedi 24 mai 2008, à Belgrade, en Serbie. Il fut remporté par la Russie, avec la chanson Believe, interprétée par Dima Bilan. L'Ukraine termina deuxième et la Grèce, troisième.

La Serbie, qui avait remporté l'édition 2007, se chargea de l’organisation de l’édition 2008.
Les préparatifs du concours furent un temps suspendus par la déclaration unilatérale d’indépendance du Kosovo, le 22 février 2008. Belgrade fut secouée par des troubles et des émeutes, au point que l’UER remit en cause la tenue du concours dans la capitale serbe. L’Union finit par obtenir la garantie expresse du gouvernement serbe que la sécurité de l’évènement serait assurée. Les délégations albanaises, croates et israéliennes bénéficièrent de mesures de protection supplémentaires. Au final, aucun incident ne fut déploré.
Le concours eut lieu à la Belgrade Arena, salle omnisport inaugurée en 2004.

Quarante-trois pays participèrent au cinquante-troisième concours, battant ainsi le record de 2007. Ce nombre record fut égalé en 2011, mais n'a toujours pas été surpassé.
L’Autriche se retira, suite à la controverse des résultats de l’année précédente ; l'Azerbaïdjan et Saint-Marin firent leurs débuts.

Le nombre croissant de pays participants et la controverse sur les résultats de l’édition 2007 poussèrent l’UER à modifier les règles du concours. Le principe d’une demi-finale unique, utilisé depuis 2004, fut supprimé et remplacé par celui de deux demi-finales, organisées le mardi et le jeudi précédant la finale.

Les présentateurs des deux soirées furent Jovana Janković et Željko Joksimović. Ils s’exprimèrent en anglais et en français, ajoutant quelques mots en serbe. Tous deux furent secondés dans leur tâche par Kristina et Bane, présents dans la green room.
Željko Joksimović avait déjà représenté son pays au concours, en 2004, et avait alors terminé deuxième. En outre, il avait écrit et composé la chanson ayant représenté la Bosnie-Herzégovine au concours, en 2006, et qui avait terminé troisième.
Le choix de Željko Joksimović suscita une certaine controverse lorsqu’il apparut qu’il était également l’auteur de la chanson représentant la Serbie, cette année-là. Le débat fut alors lancé sur la totale impartialité du présentateur. Afin d’éviter toute controverse récurrente, l'UER décida de modifier les règles du concours et d’interdire à l'avenir le cumul des fonctions de présentateur et d’auteur.

La première demi-finale eut lieu le mardi 20 mai 2008 et dura près de deux heures. Elle fut centrée sur le thème de la ville.
Dix-neuf pays concoururent pour une des dix places en finale. L’Allemagne et l’Espagne votèrent dans cette demi-finale.
La chanson israélienne, The Fire in Your Eyes, avait été écrite et composée par Dana International, qui avait remporté la victoire pour son pays en 1998.
Ce fut la troisième fois qu’une chanson en langage imaginaire fut présentée au concours. Il s’agissait de la chanson belge O Julissi. La première avait été Sanomi, qui avait également représenté la Belgique en 2003 et terminé deuxième. La deuxième avait été Amambanda, qui avait représenté les Pays-Bas en 2006 et terminé vingtième en demi-finale.
Le représentant irlandais, Dustin the Turkey (Dustin la dinde), suscita une vaste controverse dans son pays, après sa sélection. Il s’agissait en réalité d’une marionnette au faciès de dinde et aux propos outranciers. Certains estimèrent que le personnage donnerait une mauvaise image de l’Irlande sur la scène internationale. Dustin the Turkey demeure toujours le seul concurrent non humain de l’histoire du concours.
Le représentant russe, Dima Bilan, se fit accompagner sur scène par le violoniste hongrois Edvin Marton et le triple champion du monde de patinage artistique, Evgeni Plushenko.

La deuxième demi-finale eut lieu le jeudi 22 mai 2008 et dura près de deux heures. Elle fut centrée sur le thème de l’eau.
Dix-neuf pays concoururent pour une des dix places en finale. La France, le Royaume-Uni et la Serbie votèrent dans cette demi-finale.
La prestation des représentants estoniens, le groupe Pirates of the Sea, fut la première de l’histoire du concours à recourir à la technique de l’écran éclaté.

La finale eut lieu le samedi 24 mai 2008, exactement le même jour que la toute première édition du concours, en 1956. Elle était centrée sur le thème de la confluence et dura près de trois heures et seize minutes.
Vingt-cinq pays concoururent pour la victoire : les « Big Four », le pays hôte et les vingt pays qualifiés des deux demi-finales.
Ce fut la toute première fois qu’une finale ne vit concourir aucune chanson en français. Même la chanson représentant la France était rédigée quasi intégralement en anglais. Cela avait suscité une telle controverse lors de sa sélection, que son auteur et interprète, Sébastien Tellier, avait dû ajouter deux phrases supplémentaires en français. Lors de sa prestation, Sébastien Tellier arriva sur scène dans une voiturette de golf, devenant le premier interprète de l’histoire du concours à recourir à un engin motorisé comme accessoire. En outre, il inhala de l’hélium avant d’entamer le deuxième couplet, déformant ainsi sa voix, autre grande première.

Ce fut la première victoire de la Russie au concours.
Dima Bilan reçut le trophée de la victoire des mains de Marija Šerifović, gagnante de l'année précédente.
Ce fut la huitième année consécutive qu'un pays remporta le concours pour la première fois, un record toujours inégalé. Ce fut la deuxième année consécutive que l’Ukraine termina à la deuxième place. Enfin, ce fut la neuvième fois (après 1958, 1962, 1963, 1968, 1971, 1973, 1978 et 2001) que la chanson passée en deuxième position termina à la dernière place, un autre record inégalé.

The Eurovision Song Contest 2008 was the fifty-third edition of the competition . It took place on Tuesday 20 , Thursday 22 and Saturday, May 24, 2008 , in Belgrade, Serbia. It was won by Russia, with the song Believe, sung by Dima Bilan . Ukraine finished second and Greece third.

Serbia , who won the 2007 edition , undertook the organization of the 2008 edition.
Preparations for the competition were once suspended by the unilateral declaration of independence of Kosovo, 22 February 2008 statement. Belgrade was shaken by riots and disturbances , so that the EBU put into question the contest in the Serbian capital . The Union finally obtain the express warranty of the Serbian government that the security of the event would be assured. The Albanian delegation , Croatian and Israeli benefited from additional protective measures . In the end, no incident was said.
The competition took place at the Belgrade Arena sports hall opened in 2004.

Forty-three countries participated in the fifty-third contest , beating the 2007 record . This record was equaled in 2011, but has not been surpassed .
Austria withdrew following the controversial results of the previous year, Azerbaijan and Santheir debut .

The growing number of participating countries and the dispute over the results of the 2007 EBU pushed to change the rules of the contest. The principle of a single semi-final , used since 2004 , was abolished and replaced by two semi-finals , held on Tuesday and Thursday before the final.

Presenters from both parties were Jovana Janković and Željko Joksimović . They expressed themselves in English and French , adding a few words in Serbian . Both were assisted in their task by Kristina Bane present in the green room .
Željko Joksimović had represented his country in the competition in 2004 and was then finished second. In addition, he wrote and composed the song that represented Bosnia and Herzegovina in the competition in 2006 and finished third .

The choice of Željko Joksimović sparked some controversy when it appeared he was also the author of the song from Serbia this year. The debate was then launched on the absolute impartiality of the presenter. To avoid recurring controversy , the EBU decided to change the rules of the competition and to prevent the future accumulation of functions presenter and author .

The first semi-final took place Tuesday, May 20, 2008 and lasted nearly two hours. It was centered on the theme of the city.
Nineteen countries competed for ten places in the final . Germany and Spain voted in this semi-final .
Israeli song, The Fire in Your Eyes , was written and composed by Dana International, who won the victory for his country in 1998.
This was the third time a song imaginary language was submitted to the competition . It was the Belgian song O Julissi . The first was Sanomi , who also represented Belgium in 2003 and finished second. The second was Amambanda , who represented the Netherlands in 2006 and finished twentieth in the semifinals .
The Irish representative Dustin the Turkey ( Dustin the turkey), aroused considerable controversy in his country after his selection . It was actually a puppet facies turkey and about outrageous . Some felt that the character would give a bad image of Ireland on the international stage. Dustin the Turkey remains the only non-human competitor in the history of the contest.
The Russian representative , Dima Bilan , took with him on stage by Hungarian violinist Edvin Marton and triple world champion figure skater Evgeni Plushenko .

The second semi -final took place Thursday, May 22, 2008 and lasted nearly two hours. It was centered on the theme of water .
Nineteen countries competed for ten places in the final . France, the United Kingdom and Serbia voted in this semi-final .
Delivery Estonian representatives , the group Pirates of the Sea was the first of the history of the competition to use the technique of split screen.

The final took place on Saturday, May 24, 2008 , exactly the same day as the first edition of the competition in 1956. It was centered on the theme of confluence and lasted nearly three hours and sixteen minutes.
Twenty-five countries competed for the victory of the "Big Four" , the host country and twenty qualified two semifinal country.
It was the first time a final saw no competing French song . Even the song representing France was written almost entirely in English. This aroused such controversy when selected , the author and performer, Sébastien Tellier , had to add two more sentences in French . During his performance, Sébastien Tellier arrived on stage in a golf cart , becoming the first performer of the history of the competition to use a motor vehicle as an accessory . In addition, inhalation of helium before starting the second verse , and distorting his voice , another first .

It was the first victory of Russia in the contest.
Dima Bilan received the trophy from the hands of victory Marija Šerifović , winner of the previous year.
It was the eighth consecutive year that a country won the competition for the first time , a record still unmatched . It was the second consecutive year that Ukraine finished in second place. Finally , it was the ninth time ( after 1958 , 1962, 1963 , 1968, 1971 , 1973, 1978 and 2001) as the last song finished in second to last place , another unbeaten record .
