Le concours Eurovision de la chanson 1997 fut la quarante-deuxième édition du concours. Il se déroula le samedi 3 mai 1997, à Dublin, en Irlande. Il se termina par la victoire du Royaume-Uni, avec la chanson Love Shine A Light, interprétée par le groupe Katrina and the Waves, formé de l'américaine Katrina Leskanich et des britanniques Kimberley Rew, Alex Cooper et Vince de la Cruz. L’Irlande, pays hôte, termina deuxième et la Turquie, troisième, son meilleur résultat jusqu’alors.
Le vote par téléphone fut introduit pour la première fois dans cinq pays (l’Allemagne, l’Autriche, le Royaume-Uni, la Suède et la Suisse).

L’Irlande, qui avait remporté l'édition 1996, se chargea de l’organisation de l’édition 1997.

Suite à la controverse causée par la méthode de présélection utilisée l’année précédente, l’UER décida de réinstaurer la règle de relégation, en l’adaptant. Désormais, les pays participants seraient relégués selon la moyenne des résultats obtenus lors de leurs cinq dernières participations. Aucun pays ne pourrait être relégué plus d’une année. Enfin, l’UER rehaussa à nouveau à vingt-cinq, le nombre de pays autorisés à concourir.
Vingt-cinq pays participèrent donc à la finale du quarante-deuxième concours : le pays hôte, les cinq contributeurs les plus importants au budget de l’Union, les pays absents l’année précédente et les quatorze pays ayant obtenu les meilleurs résultats entre 1992 et 1996.
Par conséquent, cinq pays firent leur retour : l’Allemagne, le Danemark, la Hongrie, l’Italie et la Russie. Trois autres durent se retirer : la Belgique, la Finlande et la Slovaquie. Initialement, Israël devait revenir, mais dut s’abstenir, la date de la finale coïncidant à nouveau avec Yom Hazikaron. Ce retrait permit à la Bosnie-Herzégovine de ne pas être reléguée.

Les présentateurs de la soirée furent Carrie Crowley et Ronan Keating. La première s’exprima en anglais, en français et en gaélique ; le second, en anglais et plus rarement en gaélique.
Ronan Keating était alors membre du groupe irlandais Boyzone.


Juste avant l’ouverture de la finale, l’organisation terroriste irlandaise IRA fit parvenir un message codé au Point Theatre, signalant qu’une bombe allait exploser dans le bâtiment. Les responsables de la sécurité se réunirent en urgence et malgré la menace, décidèrent de lancer le concours. Ils basèrent leur décision sur les résultats d’une inspection de sécurité, conduite durant l’après-midi avec des chiens et des détecteurs à métaux et durant laquelle rien de suspect n’avait été découvert. Il s’agissait en réalité d’un coup de bluff de l’IRA. La nouvelle fut tenue secrète toute le soirée et révélée seulement le lendemain matin.

Vingt-cinq chansons concoururent pour la victoire.
La représentante russe, Alla Pugacheva, était une très grande star dans son pays. Elle y avait déjà vendu des millions de disques et avait rencontré autant de succès au théâtre, au cinéma et dans la mode[4]. Alla Pugacheva arriva à Dublin, certaine de sa victoire et se comporta comme une véritable diva, à la grande surprise des autres candidats. Elle commanda notamment une limousine pour ses déplacements et se fit accompagner partout par une nuée de journalistes et de photographes. Elle termina finalement quinzième.
Les représentants britanniques, le groupe Katrina and the Waves, avait remporté un immense succès international en 1985, avec leur chanson Walking On Sunshine. En participant au concours, ils voulaient donner un nouvel élan à leur carrière. Pour sa prestation, Katrina porta une chemise verte, achetée pour deux euros en seconde main, sur un marché.
La prestation la plus remarquée de la soirée fut celle du représentant islandais, Paul Oscar. Il utilisa comme accessoire, un sofa de cuir blanc et se fit accompagner par quatre danseuses en tenue de cuir et de latex, pour une performance sexuellement explicite.

Ce fut la cinquième victoire du Royaume-Uni au concours. Le pays égala ainsi le nombre de victoires de la France et du Luxembourg.
D’autres records furent établis ce soir-là. Premièrement, en obtenant 227 points, le Royaume-Uni battit le record de 226 points, obtenu par l’Irlande en 1995. Ce record ne fut surpassé qu’en 2004, lorsque l’Ukraine obtint 280 points. Deuxièmement, le pays obtint à dix reprises la note maximale, surpassant le record précédent établi en 1982, par l’Allemagne, qui l’avait obtenu à neuf reprises. Ce record fut battu en 2009, par la Norvège qui l’obtint à seize reprises. Troisièmement et pour la deuxième fois dans l’histoire du concours, après 1978, le Royaume-Uni obtint la note maximale à cinq reprises consécutives. Ce record tient toujours.
Katrina devint la première artiste d’origine américaine à remporter le concours. Le groupe finit par se séparer, deux ans après leur victoire.
Pour la première fois depuis 1983, deux pays terminèrent derniers avec "nul point" : la Norvège et le Portugal.

The Eurovision Song Contest 1997 was the forty-second edition of the competition . It took place Saturday, May 3, 1997 , in Dublin, Ireland. It ended with the victory of the United Kingdom with the song Love Shine A Light , performed by Katrina and the Waves group , consisting of the U.S. and British Katrina Leskanich Kimberley Rew , Alex Cooper and Vince de la Cruz. Ireland , the host country , Turkey finished second and third , his best result so far.
Telephone voting was introduced for the first time in five countries ( Germany , Austria, the United Kingdom , Sweden and Switzerland ) .

Ireland , who won the 1996 edition , undertook the organization of the 1997 edition .

Following the controversy caused by the screening method used in the previous year , the EBU decided to reinstate the rule of relegation , adapting . Now , participating countries would relegated based on the average results in their last five appearances . No country could be relegated more than a year . Finally , the EBU upstepped again twenty-five , the number of countries allowed to compete .
Twenty-five countries therefore participate in the final competition of the forty-second : the host country , the five most important contributors to the EU budget , the country absent the previous year and the fourteen countries with the best results from 1992 and 1996.
Therefortheir return to Germany, Denmark, Hungary, Italy and Russia. Three others had to withdraw : Belgium, Finland and Slovakia. Initially , Israel was to return but had to abstain , the date of the final coincided with Yom Hazikaron again . This withdrawal allowed BiH not be relegated .

The presenters of the evening were Carrie Crowley and Ronan Keating. The first spoke in English, French and Gaelic , the second in English and occasionally in Gaelic.
Ronan Keating was a member of the Irish band Boyzone .

Just before the opening of the final , the Irish terrorist organization IRA did send a coded message to the Point Theatre , indicating that a bomb would explode in the building. The security officials met in emergency and despite the threat , decided to launch the contest . They based their decision on the results of a safety inspection conducted during the afternoon with dogs and metal detectors , during which nothing suspicious was found . It was really a bluff of the IRA. The news was kept secret throughout the evening and revealed only in the morning.

Twenty- five songs competed for the win.
The Russian representative , Alla Pugacheva was a very big star in his country. She had already sold millions of records and met much success in theater, film and fashion . [4] Alla Pugacheva arrived in Dublin, some of his victory and behaved like a true diva, much to the surprise of the other candidates . In particular, it ordered a limousine for traveling and was accompanied everywhere by a swarm of reporters and photographers . She eventually finished fifth .
British officials , the Katrina and the Waves group , won a huge international success in 1985 with their song Walking On Sunshine . By entering the contest , they wanted to give a new impetus to their career. For his performance, Katrina wore a green shirt , bought for two euros second hand , in a market .
The most notable performance of the evening was that the Icelandic representative, Paul Oscar . He used as an accessory , a white leather sofa and was accompanied by four dancers dressed in leather and latex for a sexually explicit performance.

This was the fifth victory of the United Kingdom in the contest. The countries and equaled the number of wins in France and Luxembourg.
Other records were set that night . First, getting 227 points , the UK broke the record of 226 points obtained by Ireland in 1995. This record was surpassed in 2004 , when Ukraine gained 280 points . Second, the country received ten times the maximum rating, surpassing the previous record set in 1982 by Germany , who had obtained nine times. This record was beaten in 2009 by Norway who won sixteen times . Third , for the second time in the history of the contest, after 1978 , the United Kingdom obtained the maximum score five consecutive times. This record still stands.
Katrina became the first American artist to win the contest. The group eventually split , two years after their victory.
For the first time since 1983, the two countries last terminèrent with " null point " Norway and Portugal.

Winner 1997 - Royaume-Uni - United Kingdom
