Le concours Eurovision de la chanson 2001 fut la quarante-sixième édition du concours. Il se déroula le samedi 12 mai 2001, à Copenhague, au Danemark. Il fut remporté par l’Estonie, avec la chanson Everybody, interprétée par Tanel Padar, Dave Benton et le groupe 2XL. Le Danemark, pays hôte, termina deuxième et la Grèce, troisième.

Le Danemark, qui avait remporté l'édition 2000, se chargea de l’organisation de l’édition 2001. La volonté initiale des organisateurs était de surpasser de toutes les façons possibles la production suédoise de l’année précédente. Ils décidèrent pour cela de transformer le concours en une superproduction télévisuelle à la pointe de la technologie et du progrès.
De son côté, l’UER décida de modifier les règles présidant au système de relégation. Désormais, seraient qualifiés d’office pour la finale de l’année suivante : les « Big Four » (les quatre plus importants contributeurs financiers de l’Union – c’est-à-dire l’Allemagne, l’Espagne, la France et le Royaume-Uni), les pays ayant été relégués et les quinze pays ayant obtenu le meilleur classement (ce compris le pays vainqueur).

Vingt-trois pays participèrent à la finale du quarante-sixième concours.
Sept pays furent relégués : l’Autriche, la Belgique, Chypre, la Finlande, la Macédoine, la Roumanie et la Suisse.
Six pays firent leur retour : la Bosnie-Herzégovine, la Grèce, la Lituanie, la Pologne, le Portugal et la Slovénie.

La télévision publique danoise rencontra quelques difficultés dans le choix de la salle destinée à accueillir le concours. Au final, elle se décida pour le Parken Stadium. Il fallut alors construire un toit rétractable au-dessus du stade pour l’adapter à la circonstance. Le résultat fut cependant décevant : la plupart des spectateurs dans le Parken ne purent même pas apercevoir les artistes, étant tous assis trop loin de la scène.

Le commentateur britannique, Terry Wogan, s’attira les foudres de la télévision et de l’opinion publique danoise, suite à ses remarques acerbes sur les présentateurs et leur manière de s’exprimer. Durant la retransmission, il les affubla de surnoms peu flatteurs : Pilmark devint le « Docteur la Mort » et Back, la « Petite Souris », la « Petite Sirène » et la « Fiancée de Frankenstein ». Les organisateurs et la population danoise s’en sentirent si insultés, que Wogan et la BBC durent par la suite publier une lettre officielle d’excuses.

La chanson suédoise, Listen to Your Heartbeat, fut accusée d’être un plagiat de Liefde is een kaartspel, qui avait représenté la Belgique au concours 1996. Le Groupe de Référence de l’UER se saisit de l’affaire et la présenta devant un tribunal. Dans l’attente du jugement, il fut décidé que la chanson pourrait malgré tout concourir.


Vingt-trois chansons concoururent pour la victoire.

Avant la finale, les chansons grecque, française et slovène étaient les favorites des fans, des parieurs et des sondages sur Internet. Mais elles ne terminèrent respectivement que troisième, quatrième et septième du classement général.
Pour la toute première fois, deux artistes concourant la même année portaient le même nom : la représentante néerlandaise et la représentante allemande s’appelaient toutes deux, Michelle.
Pour la sixième fois, après 1956, 1965, 1967, 1970 et 1975, les Pays-Bas passèrent en première position. Ce record demeure toujours inégalé.
Enfin, ce fut la toute première fois que la chanson représentant la France fut interprétée dans une langue étrangère. En effet, Natasha Saint-Pier décida de passer à l’anglais pour la seconde partie de son interprétation.
Les représentants estoniens étaient un duo formé spécialement pour l’occasion. Dave Benton était originaire d’Aruba, île des Antilles néerlandaises. Il était tombé amoureux lors d’un voyage en Europe et avait finalement décidé de s’installer en Estonie. Tanel Padar, quant à lui, avait déjà participé au concours, l’année précédente. Il faisait partie des choristes de la chanteuse Ines, qui était alors sa compagne.

Ce fut la première victoire de l’Estonie au concours. Le pays devint ainsi la première ex-république soviétique à décrocher le grand prix et le premier pays à l’emporter pour la toute première fois, depuis 1989.
Dave Benton devint, quant à lui, le premier artiste noir à remporter le concours, trente-cinq ans après Milly Scott, la première artiste noire à avoir concouru à l’Eurovision, en 1966.
Les vainqueurs reçurent le trophée de la victoire des mains de Søren Pilmark. Avant d’effectuer leur reprise, ils remercièrent les organisateurs et le public danois pour leur accueil.



The Eurovision Song Contest 2001 was the forty-sixth edition of the competition . It took place Saturday, May 12, 2001 in Copenhagen , Denmark. It was won by Estonia with the song Everybody , performed by Tanel Padar , Dave Benton and 2XL group. Denmark , the host country , finished second and Greece third.

Denmark , who won the 2000 edition , undertook the organization of the 2001 edition . The original intention of the organizers was to surpass all possible ways the Swedish production of the previous year. Why they decided to turn the contest into a television blockbuster at the forefront of technology and progress.
For its part, the EBU decided to change the rules governing the system of relegation. Now would be automatically qualified for the final of the next year, the "Big Four" (the four biggest financial contributors to the EU - that is to say, Germany, Spain, France and the United Kingdom), the country has been relegated and the fifteen countries with the highest ranking ( including the winning country ) .

Twenty-three countries participated in the finals of the forty-sixth contest.
Seven countries were relegated : Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Finland, Macedonia, Romania and Switzerland.
Six countries made their return: Bosnia and Herzegovina , Greece, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal and Slovenia.

The Danish public television encountered some difficulties in the choice of room for hosting the contest. In the end, she decided on the Parken Stadium. It was then building a retractable roof over the stadium to fit the occasion. The result was disappointing, however : most viewers in the Parken could not even see the artists are all sitting too far away from the scene.

The British commentator Terry Wogan , incurred the wrath of television and the Danish public , after his scathing remarks about the presenters and how they express themselves. During the broadcast , he affubla of unflattering nicknames Pilmark became "Doctor Death" and Back, "Little Mouse ", the " Little Mermaid " and " Bride of Frankenstein ". The organizers and the Danish population in felt so insulted that Wogan and the BBC had subsequently issue an official letter of apology .

Swedish song, Listen to Your Heartbeat , was accused of being a plagiarism Liefde is een kaartspel , who represented Belgium at the 1996 contest . Reference Group of the EBU seized of the matter and presented in court. Pending the decision, it was decided that the song could still compete at all.


Twenty- three songs competed for the win.

Before the final, the Greek songs, French and Slovenian were fan favorites , punters and internet surveys . But they terminèrent respectively the third , fourth and seventh overall .
For the first time , two artists competing in the same year had the same name : the Dutch representative and the German representative both were called Michelle .
For the sixth time , after 1956 , 1965, 1967 , 1970 and 1975 , the Netherlands passed in first position. This record is still unmatched .
Finally , it was the first time that the song representing France was interpreted in a foreign language . In fact , Natasha Saint -Pier decided to switch to English for the second part of his interpretation.
Estonian representatives were a duo formed especially for the occasion . Dave Benton was a native of Aruba, the Netherlands Antilles island . He fell in love during a trip to Europe and had finally decided to settle in Estonia. Tanel Padar , meanwhile , had already participated in the contest last year. He was one of the singers singer Ines , who was his companion.

It was the first victory of Estonia in the contest. The country thus became the first former Soviet republic to win the grand prize and the first country to win for the first time since 1989.
Dave Benton became , meanwhile , the first black artist to win the competition , thirty-five years after Milly Scott, the first black artist to have competed at Eurovision in 1966.
The winners received the trophy from the hands of victory Søren Pilmark . Before making their recovery, they thanked the organizers and the Danish public for their hospitality .
