Le concours Eurovision de la chanson 1996 fut la quarante-et-unième édition du concours. Il se déroula le samedi 18 mai 1996, à Oslo, en Norvège. Il fut remporté par l’Irlande, avec la chanson The Voice, interprétée par Eimear Quinn. La Norvège, pays hôte, termina deuxième et la Suède, troisième.

Ce fut la seule et unique fois que l’Allemagne ne participa pas à une finale du concours. Cette absence suscita un vif mécontentement dans le chef de la télévision publique allemande et ne manqua pas de poser un problème capital à l’UER. En effet, l’Allemagne était (et demeure toujours) le premier contributeur financier de l’Union et du concours. Le risque de pertes financières récurrentes et de diminutions d’audience conséquentes mènera finalement l’UER à créer un statut particulier pour ses cinq contributeurs principaux (l’Allemagne, l’Espagne, la France, l’Italie et le Royaume-Uni). Ceux-ci, connus désormais sous le nom de « Big Five », reçurent la garantie d’une place automatique en finale.

Vingt-trois pays participèrent à la finale du quarante-et-unième concours.
Ayant passé l’épreuve de la présélection, l’Estonie, la Finlande, les Pays-Bas, la Slovaquie et la Suisse firent leur retour. En revanche, l’Allemagne, le Danemark, la Hongrie, Israël et la Russie durent se retirer.

Les présentateurs de la soirée furent Ingvild Bryn et Morten Harket. 
Ils s’exprimèrent principalement en norvégien et en anglais, plus rarement en français.
Morten Harket était le chanteur du groupe norvégien a-ha. Il hésita longuement avant d’accepter le rôle de présentateur et ne l’endossa qu’après avoir reçu l’assurance de pouvoir interpréter son nouveau single en ouverture.

Vingt-trois chansons concoururent pour la victoire. Pour la toute première fois, chaque prestation bénéficia d’un effet numérique différent, visant à la mettre en valeur.

La représentant anglaise, Gina G, porta une robe métallique créée par Paco Rabanne. Cette robe était destinée à l’origine à Cher, qui la refusa. Gina G la reprit et la fit transformer en minijupe. Sa chanson, Ooh Aah… Just a Little Bit, devint numéro un des ventes de disques au Royaume-Uni. Ce fut la première fois depuis Bucks Fizz en 1981, qu’un représentant anglais atteignit pareil résultat. De même, la chanson atteignit la douzième place dans les classements américains, la meilleure position jamais obtenue par une chanson représentant le Royaume-Uni au concours. Ooh Aah… Just a Little Bit devint donc le plus grand succès commercial de l’édition 1996 et décrocha même une nomination aux Grammy Awards, au titre de « Best Dance Act ».
Le représentant autrichien, George Nussbaumer, était aveugle de naissance. Sa chanson, Weil’s dr guat got, fut la première chanson gospel à être présentée au concours.
La chanson irlandaise, The Voice, avait été composée par Brendan Graham. Celui-ci était déjà l’auteur de When (qui avait représenté l’Irlande en 1976 et terminé à la dixième place) et surtout de Rock 'n' Roll Kids (qui avait remporté la victoire en 1994, toujours pour l’Irlande).
L’un de membres du groupe suédois One More Time, Peter Grönvall, était en réalité le fils de Benny Andersson, membre du groupe ABBA qui avait remporté la victoire en 1974.

Ce fut la septième victoire de l’Irlande au concours. 
Ce fut sa quatrième victoire en cinq années, après 1992, 1993 et 1994.
L’Irlande battit ainsi son propre record de six victoires. A l’heure actuelle, le pays détient toujours le record du nombre de victoires au concours.
Eimear Quinn reçut le trophée de la victoire des mains des membres du groupe Secret Garden, gagnant de l’année précédente. Sa victoire fut plutôt mal accueillie par le public présent dans la salle et de nombreux spectateurs quittèrent leur place avant le début de sa reprise.
La Norvège demeure toujours le seul pays à avoir terminé à la deuxième place, sans recevoir aucun "douze points".
Le Portugal termina à la sixième place. A l’heure actuelle, cela demeure toujours son meilleur résultat au concours.

The Eurovision Song Contest 1996 was the forty-first edition of the competition . It took place Saturday, May 18, 1996 in Oslo , Norway. It was won by Ireland with the song The Voice , played by Eimear Quinn . Norway , the host country , finished second and Sweden third.

This was the only time that Germany did not participate in the final contest . This lack led to great discontent on the part of the German public television and did not fail to pose a major problem to the EBU. Indeed , Germany was ( and still is ) the largest financial contributor to the Union and the competition. The risk of recurrent financial losses and substantial decreases in hearing ultimately lead EBU create a special status for its five major contributors ( Germany, Spain, France , Italy and the United Kingdom). These, now known as the "Big Five" , received the guarantee of an automatic place in the final .

Twenty-three countries participated in the finals of the forty-first contest.
Having passed ththeir return. In contrast, Germany , Denmark , Hungary, Israel and Russia had to withdraw .

The presenters of the evening were Ingvild Bryn and Morten Harket .
They expressed mainly in Norwegian and English , and more rarely in French .
Morten Harket was the lead singer of the Norwegian band a-ha . He hesitated long before accepting the role of presenter and not put on after being assured to interpret her new single opening.

Twenty- three songs competed for the win. For the first time, each service awarded a different digital effect , to enhance it .
The British representative, Gina G, wore a metallic dress designed by Paco Rabanne. This dress was originally intended for Cher, who refused . Gina G went and made the turn in a miniskirt . His song , Ooh Aah ... Just a Little Bit , became number one selling drives in the UK . It was the first time since Bucks Fizz in 1981, an English representative reached such a result . Similarly, the song reached the twelfth place in the U.S. charts , the highest position ever achieved by a song representing the UK in the contest. Ooh Aah ... Just a Little Bit thus became the biggest commercial success of the 1996 edition and even picked up a Grammy nomination , the title of " Best Dance Act ".
The Austrian representative , George Nussbaumer was blind from birth. His song , Weil 's dr guat got was the first gospel song to be presented to the contest.
Irish song, The Voice , was composed by Brendan Graham. He was already the author of When ( who represented Ireland in 1976 and finished in tenth place ) and especially Rock 'n ' Roll Kids (who won in 1994 , always for Ireland ) .
One member of the Swedish group One More Time , Peter Grönvall , was actually the son of Benny Andersson of ABBA member who had won in 1974.

It was the seventh win for Ireland in the competition.
It was his fourth win in five years, after 1992 , 1993 and 1994.
Ireland and broke his own record of six wins . At present , the country still holds the record for most wins in the contest.
Eimear Quinn received the winner's trophy from the hands of members of the group Secret Garden , winner of the previous year. His victory was rather poorly received by the audience in the room and many spectators left their place before the beginning of his recovery.
Norway remains the only country to have finished in second place , receiving no " twelve points " .
Portugal finished in sixth place . At present , it remains his best result in the contest.
