Avant la victoire de 2006, la Finlande a été considérée par beaucoup comme l'ultime pays de l'Eurovision.
Il a placé en dernière position au total neuf fois et a obtenu un score nul (zéro points) à trois reprises.
Durant les années 1990 et début 2000, la Finlande est sans doute le pays le plus touché par les régimes de relégations diverses visant à limiter le nombre de participants autorisés au concours chaque année.

En raison de faibles résultats, la Finlande a été exclue du concours en 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001 et 2003. Avant 2006.
Il y avait même une blague populaire circulant en Finlande, où un homme libère un génie dans une bouteille:
Génie: Merci de me libérer! Je vais maintenant vous accordez à un souhait.
Homme: Ramener la Carélie finlandaise de retour en Finlande (ancienne province finlandaise maintenant russe)!
Genie: C'est un trop gros souhait, peut-être un plus petit?
Homme: OK, laissez la Finlande gagner l'Eurovision Song Contest, juste une fois!
Génie: Hmm ... laissez-moi encore voir cette carte ...
Première Victoire en 2006, la Finlande a finalement remporté la victoire, avec une entrée radicalement différente de la dominante « Europop » qui domine la compétition: une chanson hard rock, joué par un orchestre de monstres.
Le groupe Lordi et sa chanson « Hard Rock Hallelujah » a battu des records de cotation le plus grand nombre de points dans l'histoire de l'Eurovision Song Contest (292), mais son titre a été récupéré par la Norvège en 2009 (387points).

Before the victory of 2006, Finland has been regarded by many as the ultimate land of Eurovision.
He placed last in total nine times and scored zero (zero points) on three occasions.
